If you're looking for an externally guided sense of direction, there's always the classics.
You can look for inspiration from the Bible, or the great classic novels like Don Quixote or anything that catches your fancy from the Western Csushi roll.

Or heck, you can receive direction from me! >:D

Draw a cute girl doing a cute thing. You'll notice areas that don't look good, then practice it some more. All art is inspired, so watch / read / listen to something that'll get you drawing (cute girls).
