I thought typhoon => taifuu (台風) was a borrowing of the word from japanese, like tsunami, but actually it seems to be the opposite.

What words piqued your curiosity recently?

What're your favorite books?

I could perhaps be called an artsy snob for this, but one of my absolute favorite novels is House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski. I've always found the concept of labyrinths to be fascinating, as well as that of the inherent uncertainty in the image of reality presented to us by our sensory perception. This book features those two themes quite prominently, and explores them to a depth I've not seen in any other books I've yet read.

This next one might also reflect questionably on my character, but nonetheless I greatly enjoyed American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. I've struggled a lot with recurrent depersonalization, feelings of dread, and a general impression of isolation from those around me. Since the book addresses all of that, it resonated with me in that regard–though, not so much with some of the other stuff it describes.

I also love tons of H. P. Lovecraft's and Jorge Luis Borges's work, but those are predominantly short stories, not novels.

I like Dune because it's cool. God Emperor of Dune is the greatest love story ever told. Sheeana is my favourite character. I always laugh when I imagine her standing in the desert hurling insults at a captive sand worm and stamping her feet. Or bullying the priests for treating the sand worms with reverence instead of calling them by the derogatory name that she forces them to use.

For me, writing down what has happened through a specific day seems lame, so instead, i give very vage thoughts that resonate with whatever it is that I experienced that day

I'm pretty sure that writing down little thoughts will make me remember the whole occasion without any problems even after 20 years

Do you sushis have anything like this?

Well, I wouldn't say 'cool', as the content's more like mentally ill in nature (the first entry literally opens with 'mini vent' and was about my mum fat-shaming me; it's suffice to say that 'mini' juxtaposes what it would turn into), but it's a diary at least, in the form of several txt files -one for each year- and daily entries, which often include rants wrote in utter self-hatred, but, y'know, stuff. I'm kinda annoyed that I started it digitally, it's exactly that as I've been procrastinating getting a notebook for several years -yayy [/s]: perfectly balanced depression, forever. If I die by my own hands, I'm thinking of giving it to a specific friend, but I have no idea if that'll just trigger them given their like-mindedness relative to me

It's still a work in progress but I've come a long way. Now I have plenty of nice clothes and A cups! For my next steps, maybe I could get better at makeup?

1) I'm around 300lbs, and have inflexible hips. I want to hit the gym, but I fear my chronic inactivity and sedentary lifestyle has resulted in inflexibility issues that would hamper my strength-training so my mobility needs to be addressed. I actually can't sit "criss-cross apple sauce" anymore, as I could in my childhood.
2) Non-Obesity (i.e. being slim or being jacked) and flexibility
3) It's not time to weigh myself just yet but I think I did well this week, and lost 1kg/2lbs via dietary restriction. I've been following the StayFlexy guy on YouTube and, doing his routines, I was able to deepen my squat. For me, as you can imagine from the chronic sitting, the biggest obstacle for me to squatting deeply and comfortably is really the hips. My hips are quite tight, which also links into the issue with sitting with my legs crossed. I see a massive difference with my squat by simply working on the mobility in my hips. So, with the StayFlexy-guy's tips, I've got a good squat, and I've got good ankle mobility as well.
Now I'm working on Kadour Ziani's 7 Postures, and I've managed to master the easy variant of the "cow" position where one sits on the heels of their feet in a kneeling-position, and the feet are propped up to be standing on the balls of the feet (I included a picture. It's very easy to understand visually). Initially, I couldn't hold this position for ten seconds, but now I can do it. Also, I can Duck Walk now. There's a "duck walk" that's popular in the American homosexual scene, but I'm talking about the military-version.
4) Being faithful to my 5AM start in the morning means I don't need to skip progress through my mobility routine and Ziani's 7 postures, whereby I hope to "unlock" more and more of my lower body. After mastering the easy variants of the "cow" position, I hope to get good at the standard "cow" posture. Ziani calls it the cow, but he acknowledges in his book that it's more widely known throughout humanity as the Japanese "Seiza" position. Ziani has variants of the seiza that he advises one masters before moving on to the other postures, so I'll follow his plan.
And for weight loss, yeah, I plan to be faithful to my dietary restriction. There's been some ups and downs, but I think I can hold it now. I look forward to seeing how much progress I've made by around Christmas time!

>1) Where are you at?
Currently between 112kg and 115kg. Slowly gained a couple of kg every year since I left the university.

Been lifting and doing some cardio for about a year now, but I don't think my size changed that much until I recently also started controlling my diet.

>2) What is your goal?

Continue controlling my diet and find a more varied selection of recipes. Eating the same food every day is nice, but I'd like some variety besides just chicken and salmon.

Also want to keep my exercise habit, so I don't lose my habit over winter like I did last year.

Lose much of the excessive body fat. If I could get down to under 100kg before christmas. My goal is maybe 80-90kg, depending body fat percentage.

>3) What have you archived so far?

I grew taller somehow. I think lifting just fixed my posture. It is much easier to do simple tasks like squatting down to tie my shoes.

I'm trying to find a specific scene from a TV broadcast I saw at a very young age around late 2000 or early 2001. It was late at night (likely after 1 AM), probably on antenna TV. It had a grainy, old-film look that appeared black and white on the TV I was watching.

A man (appears to be a ship's officer in a coat and pants) standing somewhat isolated on the wooden deck of a period ocean liner. He raises a handgun to his head and shoots himself. There is a visible puff of smoke from the gunshot. He then slumps/falls over to the side. This was at least 3 seconds of motion, perhaps a dramatized reenactment, not the emotional climax of the scene. It felt like an illustrative cutaway during the chaos of a sinking ship.

Camera Angle & Composition (very important):
There was a superstructure/overhead deck casting a dark shadow behind the man, an open deck edge/rail to the man's right (viewer's left). Metal or painted bulkhead/wall with circular elements (portholes or light fixtures) on the right side of the frame. The man is in the mid-ground, somewhat silhouetted but with a visible face.

What I've already ruled out:
-James Cameron's 1997 Titanic (color, wrong angle)
-1996 CBS Titanic miniseries (color, wrong angle)
-A Night to Remember (1958) - no suicide scene
-Titanic: Death of a Dream / The Legend Lives On (1994) and other mainstream documentaries
-All other well-known Titanic movies, docudramas, and most YouTube recreations/searches for "Titanic Murdoch suicide reenactment" or "officer shoots himself boat deck"
-Major anthology shows like The Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents (no matching episode)

It was most likely a lesser known documentary, docudrama, or TV special from the late 1990s/early 2000s that included a brief dramatized insert of the rumored officer suicide (often linked to First Officer Murdoch) during the sinking. If anyone recognizes this specific shot or knows the exact special/documentary it came from, please let me know.

Are you against using AI? I wanted to find the name of a film I watched on a plane-trip once, and I found it using a specialised AI that focuses on identifying movies.

As much as I hate AI, I already tried with no results. It hallucinates too much and the conclusion I've come to is that I need a way to search by camera angle instead. It's such an usual choice for a suicide that I believe anyone who has seen the scene would be able to identify it.

I read another Borges short story from the "Ficciones" book (also knows as "Fictions" and "Labyrinths". The next time I post a review regarding this book, it'll be the entirety of this Short Story compilation, rather than individual short stories.

"The Approach to Al'Mutasim" is what I read. It's like a literary commentary? I believe I know a little bit about Borges to expect stuff like this. He's basically reviewing a fictitious book. Interesting, I guess. I did quite enjoy this read, although my reading comprehension was somewhat poor I feel. I don't feel I always understood what I was reading.
So, what did I even read? A review of a fictitious story about a man who murders what seems to be a Hindu, and goes on the run, looking for this saint "Al'Mutasim"? I won't be checking Wikipedia to understand this short story this time. If I don't get it, I don't get it. And yeah, I don't get it.
It was somehow interesting to read though. As the narrator speaks about the literary world that he's in, how writers would often choose the more honourable choice of leaning into historical classics rather than leaning into their contemporaries, I thought insights like that were interesting as I don't know much about the world of literature. Apparently James Joyce's Ulysses makes heavy use of… well, I initially understood the text as saying that it made heavy use of Homer's Odyssey, but I think it just said that it made heavy use of Homer's texts. I don't know what else Homer wrote besides the Odyssey.

I feel like the parts of this short story that I enjoyed the most, were the ones where I was learning about this book he's reviewing. It did seem somewhat interesting. I even learnt how it ends! And I learnt a lot of new words along the way.
languor
metempsychosis
cabalist
pullulation
Like man, I feel it's going to take some time to get used to books.
Well anyway, unlike what I said in my previous review, where I felt that one had to be a huge literature fan already before reading Borges in order to enjoy his work (to be fair, there was a lot of literature reference in this short story too…) I do feel like this short story was enjoyable, despite me not knowing too much about literature. But I don't feel it was particularly great, I think I just enjoyed reading it. Like I said, someday, I'll post a review of the entire compilation.

Let's post our favourite movie of all time or a great movie you recently watched.

I'll start.

My favourite movie is Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. The movie is amazing, very funny while maintaining the seriousness of the topic.
The Coca-Cola part is fantastic
.

Another movie that also really like is Persepolis (yeah, I'm reposting from the .tokyo thread). It's an animation film that tells the story of the author during and after the Islamic revolution. The art is quite unique and the main character is lovely!

Current favorite kino - there's a lot of movies I can say are better, but this one is my personal favorite. I find the editing unlike any other movie I've ever watched, not just in form but in it's unique relationship to the narrative, themes, etc. Starring and (nicely) scored by it's director who's a douchebag allegedly. It's Eternal Sunshine for schizophrenics.

Crossing out Alice (1988) from the list. It was seriously the best. Coming in with no expectations, I was thrilled by the beautiful, perfectly dreamlike way the film animates the terrifying corpse wonderland. The grotesque flying hospital bed is something straight out of a Silent Hill game. Watching a brave child interact with this horrific, surreal world was wonderful - I loved the movie.
