Hello everybody, I need a comfy place to talk about VNs. /vn/ on 4chan is filled with literal pedos who only talk about eroge, and I don't like Reddit's format enough to use r/visualnovels. So what have you all been reading lately? What are some great games that we've been missing out on?

Stick with katawa shoujo and see if you like it. What started my personal love with VNs was finding something really touching… for me, that was CLANNAD.

Go to the visual novel database (vndb) and go to the front page of the VN list. Find something that interests you! You can sort by tag, and if you want something shorter (so its easier to finish), the website tells you the average time of the game.

Does anyone have any good fantasy (I don't care if it's eastern or western fantasy) or yamikawaii themed VNs that are preferably yuri but not required? I don't know too much about VNs outside of the Nonary Games series and a few romance ones but I'm not into the romance genre.

I know you guys might not find the idea of indulging in social movements enticing, but there has been this initiative recently that I believe pushes for a benefit for most of us.

Lately Games as a Service have become quite the norm in this day and age, and it's a very common trend for these games to not let players access the game's content any longer once End of Service arrives. Even if you bought a physical copy of it, there is no way to access these games any longer since they required connection to the servers to play them.

This pledge would be in order so that the EU provides consumers the right to be able to still access these games, allowing users to host their own instances of them, in the case a company or developer group decides to announce End of Service. It would allow a decentralization similar to mastodon 's infrastructure, where if one instance is shutdown, users are able to host their own servers, and the products they bought wouldn't be rendered useless.
I normally believe most users have to do the right thing and not purchase games that they'd be sure these kind of things would happen. But given the tracking record of the EU, bringing back replaceable batteries and making USB-C standard, I don't think this isn't that bad of an idea.

If you think this is a good way to help videogames in general, here are some links you might find interesting:

FAQ: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/faq

The initiative:
https://eci.ec.europa.eu/045/public/#/screen/home

The amount of signatures that are required for this to be taken into consideration by the EU parliament is 1 million, and it also requires certain thresholds to be met. ie: it requires 7 countries of the EU to reach a certain amount of signatures.

its hard to really get into. most multiplayer games with an actual fanbase fall under 3 categories:

1. games specifically meant to appeal to people and youtubers who already have a group of friends to play with, and otherwise is too involved of an experience to really get to know anyone at a reasonable pace with.

2. games that have already kind of passed their peak and are mostly dominated by a specific kind of person, making it difficult to really find anyone else (mostly normalfigs)

3. completely dead, usually the best place because the few people still playing are usually the more passionate and curious type, but still extremely difficult to find anyone in

i kinda just wanna enjoy something and meet people as i go along. its been hard trying to just enjoy single player games recently knowing that i wont make any friends playing it. it sounds silly, but my loneliness has gotten to such a point that at prolonged periods of inactivity can cause me to struggle breathing and undergo extreme stress, mostly because i am often subject to negative energy even when im not trying to socialize with anyone.
everyone needs another soul to bounce against and trying to replace it with money or fame or any other arbitrary measurement of "success" kinda just leaves you as a husk.

From what I've seen, communities aren't formed by individuals, but by trends. One does not simply make a new community and invite people into it, but rather an existing community has a trend that grows large enough that the participants in that trend split off to create a new community. You see this a lot in video game guilds, often due to differences in focus or philosophy.

So instead of recommending that others simply buck up and create new communities, I think it's more productive to encourage others to be active and make connections within their local existing communities. And through those connections, they find other people who follow the trends that more closely align with their own, and they can work with these people to form a new community.

You don't have to ask them to leave necessarily, but rather to join your new community alongside your current community. And once you've formed it, you are already close enough to the core founding members that you can establish community leaders that you trust and know will align with the core values of the community.

 No.2650

i really don't think this isn't necessarily true. plenty of communities are made when someone just makes a server and sticks all their friends in there and then all their friends' friends etc. then they all go play Skribblio together or whatever.

 No.2651

>>2648
That's what you do though – you create a server or a social media account or a guild or whatever and you keep advertising it everywhere until you have enough people who agree with you. Yeah it's tedious and frustrating and you'll get a bunch of people who show up just to mock you, but there's not much of a better way to find people. You don't need 20 million followers. A core of somewhere around 5 to 20 people is about right. That's what a normal community is.

>>2649
That's basically what I meant by usurping an existing community.

in all seriousness though, "making a community" is difficult when the kinda thing i look for is more nebulous than just "is a fan of X" or "likes Y games", i dont even think i want to create a clique, at least out of randoms online, because it kind of creates this atmosphere where where normalfigs will still dominate regardless, like, theres small, safe amounts of normalcy, and itd be plain rude if you just rejected them for that, since everyone's a little normal, but then it starts creeping in more and more inevitably, through sheer phenomena and abundance rather than any individual person's fault, and it just creates another atmosphere that you dont really feel welcome in anymore. for example, some of the games/manga i like are notoriously lewd or spooky or both, and yet whenever i try to find a server or multiplayer game for it, the communities are usually very safe and even the ones based in series that are extremely blatant with how creatively unhinged they are, shameless creator and all, they tend to actively fear ever getting into or discussing the more non normalfig safe topics, and will even forbid it in most cases despite it being a central part of the series' appeal and writing, to the point it doesnt even feel like a fanclub and more like just another place for normals to talk about hype moments and aura or whatever
i know its mostly a matter of me just properly moderating the community i create, but, like, in spite of that, its still going to be incredibly difficult to actually pass around, especially considering how dangerous big public spaces online can be, so i think i'll need to look for better alternatives than making a discord server (i know discord is lame but its the only option that isnt dead and broken)
i could try only inviting people from imageboards but i feel like thatd only work if ive already harbored a community in an imageboard before doing so, in which i have, and attempted, and failed (especially considering despite our similarities im ultimately pretty different from the most of them)
so now i explore many different imageboards trying to find something more, (which is why i am here to begin with), but again, not Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

There is NO LORE in Minecraft. Any and all Minecraft "lore" is FANFICTION. Just like there is NO PROGRESSION in Minecraft, or at least there never should be. Slaying the Ender Dragon and freeing the End is just another thing you can do in a free-to-play game, but not in the way that term's usually meant: here it means free as in freedom, not free as in beer.

You could just as truly (in a game where there is no One True Way To Play) "beat the game" by setting your goal of making 37 rows of 37 sheep-shagging redstone machines. That, too, would be progression: YOUR progression, as YOU decide. "This world… is mine to craft."

Elder millennials and Gen-X gamers understood this back in the 90's, 80's, and even 70's: games like Nethack and Daggerfall, which were also procedurally-generated like Minecraft, YOU decided on the fly what "side missions" you wanted to "complete" like making a pudding farm or deciding how best to steal that enchanted sword surrounded by guards without being caught and sent to jail.

You have no idea what a "pudding farm" is, do ya zoomers?

Hey sushis, did you guys know about "Fantasy Consoles"?
I recently attempted to locate a browser version of the "Super Hexagon" videogame because I was too impatient to download and install Steam, and I discovered that a version of Super Hexagon is playable in the browser on a "Fantasy Console" called the "TIC-80".
https://tic80.com/play?cart=311
This has been quite an interesting find for me. I have long known that it's possible to use software to emulate any hardware or hardware system (presumably provided one has enough horsepower to emulate the target system) and I knew about the Java Virtual Machine and how Java is about programming for a computer that technically doesn't exist, but still, I never imagined that not only would there be entire consoles that don't physically exist, but that they would also have these genuinely devoted communities making all of these free games for them. It's amazing and really interesting.
Apparently Celeste actually started as a game for the "PICO-8" Fantasy Console before the devs moved it to other platforms.

It's insane to me, with all of the time I've spent lurking on imageboards, particularly where videogame discussion was occurring, that I've never heard of these "Fantasy Consoles" before.
What do you think Sushis? Have you known about these for years and are just rolling your eyes right now? Do you have a favourite Fantasy Console game? Or is this new to you too?
