 No.24427

I'm not happy living with my parents. I've started working again and desperately want to move out, I've got a friend who's happy to be my room mate, but I don't know where to go from here. How do I fast track this? What should I know, and what should I do?

Main things you want to consider are your income, your transportation ability, and your living expenses. This depends a lot on where you live, though I won't ask for details. You will most likely want a roommate, for one to help deal with finances, but also to help transition your mind to a less-populated living environment. Living in an empty place can be soul crushing if you are used to having other people around. Look for small rental places near your job, or within commute distance reasonable with your type of transportation. Generally, the farther away you are from urban centers, the lower your rent will be.

You'll also want to be able to cover other lifestyle costs. Things like health and auto insurance (if applicable), utilities like electrical, water, and internet. You will likely also have to afford a security deposit for your apartment, typically 1.5x to 2x the first month of rent. So including all the costs of utilities, rent, and deposits, you will want at least 4x the rent saved in your account before moving out. A rental place will ask for your pay stubs, and typically you will be required to make at least 3x the rent to qualify. If you don't make this amount, you can combine your total income with your roommate(s) to make the required amount.
