The 27th anniversary of Hunter x Hunter's first chapter has passed by recently, and I thought it might be a fun idea to stream the 1999 anime series.

>>8611Chairman Election arc was fine, it didn't need to be long. Our protagonist was out of commission, this arc was only supposed to set up a chance for Gon to finally meet his deadbeat dad, and to introduce more of the Zaoldyeck family to potentially set up for a Killua story arc.
I agree the Chimera Ant arc sucked though, pretty standard filler material. The new greater evil shows up, protagonists split up to do a bunch of 1-on-1 battles, we get cameos of the former antagonists joining the fight as well because while they might be evil, they're not *that* evil.
How long has it been since we've seen Kurapika? That arc with him and Melody and Churro Lucifer was hype, but it feels like the author didn't know where to go next so they got sidelined.

>>8614The Boat features Kurapika as a protagonist, but it's manga only, and I doubt it's getting adapted any time soon. The Spiders get some development later on, but it's not a lot, mostly about recovering from Chrollo's nen dysfunction from what I've heard. I imagine the next one is going to be about Gon and Killua again, which would be consistent with the rhythm of the series up until now, but Togashi-sensei doesn't really want to have his assistants work on the main character art, and he's chronically ill, so we'll have to wait 10 more years for that.

>>8614Hunter x Hunter suffers from having too many characters to juggle around, each with their own subplots and character arcs, which can screw with the pacing of the entire piece as a whole. The Chimera Ant arc feels like a bunch of filler mixed in with half baked ideas and wanting to play with your new pawns (characters) a bit too much.
I really didn’t like the theme of evil in that arc at all: the belief that there is a supreme evil that requires human unity to eradicate. This is a real world political belief that’s had very disturbing implications. If you genuinely believe that you fight in the name of humanity, then your opponent is anti-human and this justifies absolutely anything, from nuking Japanese civilians to gassing Jews or pounding Arab cities to the Stone Age. Innocent blood can be shed as collateral, an unfortunate price that must be paid to destroy an existential “evil” threat to humanity. I’m really not sure what Togashi’s angle was here. On the one hand, he humanizes (heh) some of the ants (Meruem, Welfin etc) but most are irredeemably evil and must be eradicated. You can’t really tell if he’s trying to explore war in a nuanced way or if he genuinely believes in crusading against evil. The whole thing is just a mess and it’s a stark contrast to the earlier arcs which weren’t so political and always had a positive theme running through them no matter how dark it got. Once his cured of his priapism and learns about Kite’s gender transition, Gon just seems to go back to being the happy go lucky kid he was in the very beginning, as if he’d not witnessed this brutal war and dismembered a catboy. Maybe he’s psychopathic or something?
There are other problems too. The inability to retain tension, the fairly predictable soundtrack despite the budget increase, too many characters for a single non-autistic human to keep track of, and the overreliance on exposition through character monologues and narrator-san makes the whole thing feel like a radio play or an audiobook. 2011 seemed very spectacle driven, just shove as much cool shit in as possible too. It’s like they decided to take everything that 1999 did well and throw it out.
Anyway there’s my brain dead r*ddit quality take on this clusterfuck.
