Will it shine like a GabeStar on our roads or will it purely become a reflection of our current reality and flop miserably? Or will Valve instead get sued to hell for enabling unregulated gambling and unfair merchant practices?

imagine the if the memory shortage just never happened…
I think it is a solid product for someone that wants to get out of the console ecosystem, but i've been sitting on the same pc since 2019. the hardware is pretty dated, but I never had a reason to move on from it. I am certainly not an isolated case.
I think you can get a better deal at an equal price if you learn how to build a pc and buy components on sale or second hand.
or somehow get your hands on a ps5 with an old version that could allow you to install linux on it.

however, for the regular console user that doesn't want to pay a subscription anymore and wants to own a pc for the long term, it's passable.
maybe just the fact that you don't need to pay a subscription alone is enough to make the steam machine somewhat successful.

Consoles require a subscription now? What has the world come to?

It seems interesting but pricey and I prefer steam deck for its portability even if its not as high spec

specifically for online functionalities. xbox live, playstation online, nintendo online… it's been a thing since the xbox launched. if you want to play online you have to buy one. i always found it ridiculous.

oh right, I forgot about the online stuff

Yeah, for like the past two decades. I remember back in the day PS3 users made fun of 360 users for needing to pay to use their own internet.

It's total bullshit and the main reason I'm a computer user. The service economy is a racket.

Service economy is coming to computers as well, I expect Windows/Mac to move to an annual subscription model for a bloated "AI-enhanced" OS in the next decade.
