imagine the if the memory shortage just never happened…
I think it is a solid product for someone that wants to get out of the console ecosystem, but i've been sitting on the same pc since 2019. the hardware is pretty dated, but I never had a reason to move on from it. I am certainly not an isolated case.
I think you can get a better deal at an equal price if you learn how to build a pc and buy components on sale or second hand.
or somehow get your hands on a ps5 with an old version that could allow you to install linux on it.

however, for the regular console user that doesn't want to pay a subscription anymore and wants to own a pc for the long term, it's passable.
maybe just the fact that you don't need to pay a subscription alone is enough to make the steam machine somewhat successful.

specifically for online functionalities. xbox live, playstation online, nintendo online… it's been a thing since the xbox launched. if you want to play online you have to buy one. i always found it ridiculous.

Service economy is coming to computers as well, I expect Windows/Mac to move to an annual subscription model for a bloated "AI-enhanced" OS in the next decade.

I do expect that as we are able to ramp up production of GPUs and RAM again, and as we improve on local models, this will be pushed onto the consumer side. Similar to how the X window system never really caught on because everyone could locally have all the power they needed for simple tasks, and log into some supercomputer if they needed to do more tasks
