i’ve been thinking about why old websites are so fun even when they’re objectively worse at almost everything.

maybe part of it is that modern websites try to make the medium disappear, while old websites constantly remind you that you’re using a website. buttons look like buttons, links look like links, and pages feel like places you can explore or mess around with.

i get a similar feeling from terminal apps, limited game consoles, old cameras, and sometimes very simple games. the limitations somehow make the thing itself more noticeable and playful.

do you have any websites, software, or devices that feel like this? what is it about them that you enjoy?
