Do you use any programs on your computer on a daily basis? What are they? Do you use anything so much that you instinctively launch it right after turning your PC on? Are you always connected to the Internet?

Personally I use IRC, email and webchats a lot so I have a corner of my room dedicated to an old recycled PC that only runs my clients and a web browser.

Every day I check rss feeds with newsboat, I use my web browser librewolf to browse the web, I communicate with my friends using element and (unfortunately) discord. I would rather use a more lightweight matrix client than element, but the only 2 terminal based clients I know of both suck. Maybe time to switch to xmpp. I watch anime using MPV, browse my files with nnn, and listen to music with cmus. I also use vim to edit text, I've experimented with various text editors and always end up back at basic stock normal ass vim. Pretty bog standard boring stuff I think.

for those who like terminal browser, try chawan (https://git.sr.ht/~bptato/chawan)!

It supports css, picture, gemini and gopher protocol.

have you tried nheko at all? it's probably the best graphical matrix client in terms of performance vs usability/features

Just the fucking browser. I am too lazy to use anything else. I also hate the browser, but the whole ecosystem with programming is too burdensome for me to care about doing anything at all. I also don't like python which is arguably the path of least resistance for getting things done quickly.
I don't care too much about computers anymore, anyway.

If you're gonna make an imageboard, make sure you don't have ads and make sure you have a strong CSAM filter as well as racebait filter. For any soyjak party spammers or spammers in general, make a filter for that too.
Remembered that a Kiwi user told us a small powerlevel about how he used to run an obscure imageboard and despite it being so obscure and that he didn't shill it anywhere but his own site, CSAM ads/websites kept popping up (they dont have explicit images, just some simple drawings like silhouettes)
Imageboards especially dead ones have a very serious CSAM spam problem. I don't know who or what is doing this but I'll assume: Some form of web crawler/bot that detects imageboards and spams it, elaborate trolling groups on Discord or Telegram, or third worlders since in some of 3rd world countries don't decriminalize possession and distribution of it (including real and fictional)
Just some advice and theories about the whole problem with imageboards

 No.2258

If you don't want CP spam just host a 2ch style textboard instead. Make it private and recruit a bunch of friends or people you trust to test it out.

 No.2259

>>2258
Honestly not needed, just do not host vichan or anything too close to the default interface. The spammers get easily confused and deterred.

 No.2510

If you are that "idiot" and do not mind there are several higher mods over you, try endchan.net, you can create a board at there without any cost.

I think working on a project that solves a problem you have is fun, and really good if you want to learn something.
For example, I didn't like the offerings of color pickers, so I decided to make my own.
Even if you have a problem that's already solved by some software… solve it again, but your way.

I would say that for CTF stuff, it's good to practice on pico until you feel like the problems are too easy for you. Other than that, you can practice doing many of the contests, which should provide some more experience with harder tasks. In addition to being able to figure out how to do things, I think experience also helps you figure out how to do things more quickly.

the only thing that is useful for a job is being so good at something that nobody else around you has any idea what you're saying. 1. everyone will ask you to help them. 2. everyone will ask you to teach them. so just pick anything that people need know and know it better than the back of your hand.

Around a week ago, I noticed that my charger was peeled off just by a tiny bit, so i decided to put some tape on it.

Today, i noticed a weird smell coming out of my computer, specifically, from the charger.

When i touch the part with tape on it, BOOM, foarkin SMOKE starts to come out of the darn thing.

Turns out that the heat from the computer, eventually melted the tape i'd put on the peeled part of my charger

I removed the tape, and well, the charger stopped working, and i can't buy a new one (Im poor as dirt) which at the same times means, that i can't use my computer

Please, sushis, share painful experiences like these so that we all can have a laugh

I tried to add some RAM to a friend’s laptop. After installing it, the machine would turn itself off because one of the cooling fans wasn’t working right. So I decided to open her back up and check. They were connected fine so I thought I’d disconnect and reconnect them to see if that would fix them, but I applied too much force and ended up ripping the cable, forcing me to replace the whole fan too.

Help old people with computers for fun. I know this lady who's Parkinson's/arthritis/whatever was so advanced she couldn't double click the home button on the iPad fast enough. I recommended she buy an android at that point. Everyone I know recommends apple devices for their simplicity but they can do better in the accessibility department. Windows is probably the best with the key delay feature which helps when obasan wants to type on her Compaq like she's dialing a toll free nunber

Back in the day I was the idiot buying the cheapest power supplies possible and I had two separate combustion incidents. One time the PSU itself just popped and filled my room with smoke. Second time a fan splitter cable set on fire with no apparent external cause – maybe unstable voltage from the power supply and/or a bad connection in the cable?
I know what I'm doing now and I haven't had any disasters since but I do live in fear of my graphics card's 12VHPWR connector blowing up.
Fake edit: actually there was something more recent – has anyone here NOT at some point bent CPU pins? RIP to my old Ryzen 3600. Always remember to heat the IHS before attempting heatsink removal.

I had a laptop that I kept plugged in 24/7 for a couple years (before I knew this would destroy the battery). When I got a computer to replace it I realized that I had almost killed the battery, and it eventually died leaving it unable to boot.
I took out the battery which turned my laptop into a pseudo-desktop since it had to be plugged in in order to work.
On top of that, the boot process is something I'll never forget.

Step 1: turn on the laptop
Step 2: it says that the wattage is too low, so I press diagnose
Step 3: wait for it to get to the rainbow screen of test colors
Step 4: force power off
Step 5: turn on laptop again
Step 6: wattage error again, but press continue
Step 7: congratulations it booted.

If I didn't hit diagnose the cpu caps at 300Mhz, and if I didn't reboot during the repair process a loud beeping noise would happen which was annoying, I believe one time it also caused it to fail to boot.

hello sushis!!
I wanted to make a thread asking all of you to
recommend some good looking, (WITH SUPPORT FOR
JAPANESE, CHINESE AND CYRILIC CHARACTERS) bitmap
fonts

If you can, drop a link to a ttf file, as it's easier for a noob to install in that way; if you can't do that, refer to a page with instructions or give them yourself

I use Tekuplus as of now. Really easy to install as well; just download, extract
the zip file, and paste all the ttf files onto your .fonts folder in your home
directory (If you're using windows just watch a youtube tutorial)

This inspired me to look into how ttfs work.

>>2474
Sure, but if you converted the bitmap to a ttf I think it would become curves when you scaled it, because the ttf information is fundamentally stored as curves rather than a bitmap. My guess is that OP's program converts the bitmap font to a ttf font that only retains the original bitmap at one font size; I think that would be the most reasonable way to do it. So it looks right as long as you use a specific font size with it. Thinking on it more it actually seems like a good solution to making old bitmap fonts more compatible with modern programs. The bitmap fonts were only ever intended to be used at a single font size anyways, so it doesn't really matter how they scale.

This is a pretty good description of how ttf works:

I hope nobody kills me for making this thread just to share a video. The documentary is called For-Profit (Creative) Software, and it covers how business models in creative software, particularly 3D programs, have become increasingly predatory. To surprise of absolutely nobody who has ever tried 3D as a hobby and run into Autodesk’s website. It’s essentially a depressing look at how things went wrong for artists, showing how monopolies hurt consumers. Or Blender Foundation's psyop.
