There is NO LORE in Minecraft. Any and all Minecraft "lore" is FANFICTION. Just like there is NO PROGRESSION in Minecraft, or at least there never should be. Slaying the Ender Dragon and freeing the End is just another thing you can do in a free-to-play game, but not in the way that term's usually meant: here it means free as in freedom, not free as in beer.

You could just as truly (in a game where there is no One True Way To Play) "beat the game" by setting your goal of making 37 rows of 37 sheep-shagging redstone machines. That, too, would be progression: YOUR progression, as YOU decide. "This world… is mine to craft."

Elder millennials and Gen-X gamers understood this back in the 90's, 80's, and even 70's: games like Nethack and Daggerfall, which were also procedurally-generated like Minecraft, YOU decided on the fly what "side missions" you wanted to "complete" like making a pudding farm or deciding how best to steal that enchanted sword surrounded by guards without being caught and sent to jail.

You have no idea what a "pudding farm" is, do ya zoomers?

I hope you're having a great time, OP!

I wanted to play VRChat too, but some kid called me ugly, and I decided not to return to VRChat until I'm good enough with Blender to make my own pretty model, or I get a job and can hire someone to make one for me (neither of which has yet to happen). I do still want to play VRChat though, just not yet. I want to be pretty :(

I do still want to try it though, and hopefully, with a prettier model, make some friends, and maybe even attend raves!

Thanks sushi!

What avatar were you using when this kid called you ugly? I think you could get something nice for very cheap, or even for free if you don't mind spending 2 hours hopping through worlds

Oh, and another question, are on PCVR or on a standalone headset?
With the quest and such, you might find it difficult to get into raves (which are really resource intensive)

I wish you well either way sushi

I think I was using some kind of preset avatar. I did find a nice avatar I would like to use. It was made by the guy responsible for the art style of "Spiral Knights"! I don't know if you've heard of that game, but I love its art style.

I would use PC VR for raves, yeah.

Hey sushis, did you guys know about "Fantasy Consoles"?
I recently attempted to locate a browser version of the "Super Hexagon" videogame because I was too impatient to download and install Steam, and I discovered that a version of Super Hexagon is playable in the browser on a "Fantasy Console" called the "TIC-80".
https://tic80.com/play?cart=311
This has been quite an interesting find for me. I have long known that it's possible to use software to emulate any hardware or hardware system (presumably provided one has enough horsepower to emulate the target system) and I knew about the Java Virtual Machine and how Java is about programming for a computer that technically doesn't exist, but still, I never imagined that not only would there be entire consoles that don't physically exist, but that they would also have these genuinely devoted communities making all of these free games for them. It's amazing and really interesting.
Apparently Celeste actually started as a game for the "PICO-8" Fantasy Console before the devs moved it to other platforms.

It's insane to me, with all of the time I've spent lurking on imageboards, particularly where videogame discussion was occurring, that I've never heard of these "Fantasy Consoles" before.
What do you think Sushis? Have you known about these for years and are just rolling your eyes right now? Do you have a favourite Fantasy Console game? Or is this new to you too?

How do you deal with your /arcade/ backlog?

Do you keep some time of the day/week/year to find and play things you've always wanted to, or do you act on istinct? I have a shit ton of games waiting in my room (or to be downloaded) but can't find a viable method to just jump in and finish some.

My backlog is pretty small because I just play the games I want to play. I guess that's a weird way to put it but I just play them. I don't know. I will say, one game on my backlog is the Rhapsody sequel (pic rel) because I have a habit of skipping all dialogue in a video game so I have no clue what I'm supposed to do at this point of the game. (My character, i forgot her name, has to look for something. That's all I know is going on in the plot. I don't know what I'm looking for or what I'm doing or anything.)
At one point I thought about starting the game over and actually reading the dialogue so I know what's going on but on the other hand I don't feel like it.

 No.2308

The art is pretty, I like the music, and the fights are fun because the main character can summon candy to attack enemies. I like games where I can strategize fights (although Rhapsody is pretty simplistic in that nature… and the second game is even more simple than the first).
On the other hand, I also like playing VN/puzzle hybrid games and I will read the dialogue in VNs so it's not like I skip the dialogue in all games, just in most of them. Honestly, I just like playing them for the fighting and inventory management aspects.

This could have been its own thread, sushi.

And yeah, I'd say Minecraft is still quite popular. I don't think it has the grip that it used to, but nonetheless, I think it's still doing quite well.
I just checked Twitch's Minecraft category, and there's 16,000 viewers in total watching a Minecraft stream on Twitch right now, and I don't know how those numbers vary across the day. Those are pretty high numbers, especially for a game as old as Minecraft. I've seen a lot of newly released games become Twitch's Flavour of the Month and then age and lose viewership. Minecraft's success is pretty high and pretty consistent in my opinion, but I am somewhat anxious about my lack of knowledge regarding how well Twitch-viewership really represents the opinions of the gaming masses.

Thread for TTRPG discussion and organization.

# What is a TTRPG?
TTRPG, sometimes TRPG, stands for TableTop Role-Playing Game. It includes big names, like D&D, and much less heard of ones, like Song of Swords. The rule systems run from extremely thorough, with rules for things like how many Thai chilli peppers you can eat before getting ill, to so broad as to be nearly nonexistent, with only basic guidelines on how to play. In almost all systems, the key component that sets it apart from video game RPGs is the presence of the Dungeon Master, Game Master, Referee, etc. They help to adjudicate edge cases not covered by rules and create exceptions to the rules in favour of fun, meaning a TRPG has much more freedom of action than a normal RPG.

# Where do I play?
Generally, TTRPGs, especially niche ones without large player bases, are played in-person, but there are also sites and apps that allow you to play over the internet and find groups. The biggest one right now is probably roll20; signing up is free, and as a player, you never need to pay for anything. Other applications include FoundryVTT (paid for by a GM), Maptools (free), AstralVTT (free), and Fantasy Grounds (expensive, but very nice). Some groups even play on Tabletop Simulator, which has the added bonus of letting you play poker or Life before a session starts or if someone flakes.

There's also the potential to show up at a gaming store; if you live in the US, Canada, or Europe, there's plenty of those around too. Gaming stores are in-person, obviously, but they also often boast long-time, highly experienced and confident game masters who are knowledgable at how to best cater to newbies trying to enter the hobby. There are many websites online to help you find game stores near you.

# Where do you get the rulebooks?
You can buy them from places like drivethrurpg, or you can pirate them from https://thetrove.net/. As a new player, you often don't need very many books; both Shadowrun and Pathfinder have relatively complete wikis online with all the setting-agnostic information you need, and Pathfinder even has a setting wiki so there's no reason to buy the books for their content.

Since there was no thread for this topic I decided to do it myself. I'll start.

I've finished The World Ends With You, and I left it fairly cold.
It's partially my fault for playing an undub on a game that has no subtitles for its cutscenes, but even after seeing the ending on youtube, so much feels as if all that happened in the game was pointless. Which sucks because I really liked the game up until the ending.
What is happening with me that I'm not appreciating games as much as I should? Same thing happened to me with Omori, I went in thinking it would be a surreal game with some Mother inspirations but the game was far too tame for me personally. Even after hearing about the topics that the game tackles.

If sushi finished a game and also wants to talk about it he can post here freely.

Epistory - Typing Chronicles

This game was quite touching at times. This is an indie game where you control a woman that rides a large fox and you explore a world that represents the woman's internal world. There's a University-themed level for instance with challenging puzzles that exposes you to the woman's conflict with self-doubt during this era of her life.
The gameplay is predominantly executed through typing. You use the WASD keys (Steam allows a remapping to the ESDF keys, you'll see why in a moment) to navigate, but alternatively, you can also use RFJI for diagonal movement. Going clockwise, I moves you diagonally up-right, I moves you diagonally down-right, etc. I've never seen this movement system before so I thought I should mention it.
Interacting with the world is also done through typing.
You press either the Space bar or Enter key to enter into a special state from which you can interact with the world by firing energy balls at objects and enemies, however you must type the word associated with the object/enemy.
Have you played or heard of typing games? When I checked out the comment section on YouTube for trailers of the game, some people seemed unimpressed, calling the game's design dated. I never knew typing games used to be a thing supposedly, so perhaps I'm being unnecessarily detailed about an old, dead genre.
So yeah, if you see an object of interest or an enemy approaching, the procedure I would take is to hit the space bar and type out the word that's fixed above the object or enemy. Very simple concept. I did enjoy the typing challenges, but what I really enjoyed was the environment and story.
It was like a glimpse into another person's life, the highs and the lows, and it was all presented very cleanly. I noticed as well, the word choices could be selective, depending on the environment. A monster with the word "fat" above its head might appear.
The art direction was 3D origami. It's very pretty. The colour choice was typically quite bright and vivid. I really liked it. There was one level that really reminded me of the "Card Castles in the Sky" level from Alice: Madness Returns that I thought was particularly beautiful.
The game also has a Gallery. If you try to open all of the chests in each level (you select levels by entering into them from the Overworld), you collect all of the "fragments" and that reveals a picture that embodies what the level is about - what memory of the woman's lPost too long. Nice! I wanted to give this game a go, but I saw one reviewer say that he something along the lines of how he just can't shake the feeling that it's just a Sonic romhack and that really put me off from trying it. What if I like something that's not approved?! What does that say about me?! These sorts of thoughts have gone through my head for so long, they've become so subtle and ingrained, it's hard to notice.
